I haven't blogged in a long time. I've been busy with school and my personal life (lol). Stuff I don't really feel like talking about. I'm here to talk about this wonderful album I, for long, wasn't sure I wanted to listen to.
I'm a huge fan of Jill Scott's debut album - I've talked about it so much on here. I was a bit scared that I wasn't going to like the rest of her stuff. So, in my constant search for new music, I decided to finally give it a listen and oh my gawd.
It's a very different album, lyrically, than her debut but amazing nonetheless. Her writing is still spot on and she sings a lot more. I simply adore this woman. She's so real.
I am not going to make a song by song review of the album because I don't think I have much to say about each song. It really is one of those albums meant to be heard from beginning to end.
The definite stand-outs are Golden, a song about embracing your own freedom and, well, living your life like it's golden. It sounds like a very cheesy song on paper, but that's something I love about her writing. Even if the message is a bit trivial, she still manages to do it with such honesty.
Cross My Mind is a one of the few spoken songs. It's a heavy song - at least for me, it is. I can relate so fucking much to everything she says, not to mention the music is delicious.
She truly showcases her vocals on Bedda at Home, a song about how a man is 'the kind that makes her pull dollars out her pocket book; but she has something better at home.' It's probably the most exciting (vocally) song on the album. She even shouts out 'let's calm down, let's calm down,' lol.
Family Reunion is such a wonderful song about, well, family. It talks about so many things. It's definitely worth many listens.
Not Like Crazy and Nothing [Interlude] are two beautiful pieces. They have that vibe so present on her debut album; reminiscent of I Think It's Better.
I'm not saying that the rest of the album is not worthy of your time. I'm simply talking about my personal favourites.
I am definitely getting Vol. 3 after I'm truly done listening to this - I've been playing it constantly for a month now, lol. I am aware of the fact that Jill Scott's music isn't for everybody but if you're at least a bit curious, then I highly recommend listening to this wonderful album. Link in the comments.
